How To Conserve Water

Saving and conserving water can make a difference to each one of us. We are helping ourselves, as well, as Mother Earth.

Are you green?  Do you recycle?  There are many several ways on how we can help Mother Nature.  One is saving or conserving water.  How do you do it to save water like in your house, public rest rooms, hotels, schools, hospitals, and some other public places?  Proper usage of water can save us a couple dollars or whatever currency you use.  Here are some simple tips that I can share with you.  I practice them myself.

Home -

  • When washing dishes, use a large basin. Wash the dirty dishes with soap.  While water is running from the faucet and fills up the basin , rinse the glasses first because they are the cleanest among them.  Hold the glass while washing them. do not soak them in the basin.  That way you can start rinsing the other dishes. After the first rinse, of course the water will become soapy.  Do not just throw that soapy water out.  Put it in a bucket and use it to wash the dirty pans.  On the second rinse, you can put the water in another bucket and use it to water the plants.
  • This may sound funny but this is another simple way to save water.  When taking a shower or bath, you can  use a large bucket and fill it with water.  A shower cup, a small basin, and a washcloth will help you to use just a little bit of water.  Fill the basin with water and soak your washcloth with soap to rub and clean your skin surface.  When pouring water onto your hair, you may want to sitdown so the water will run through your body.  Don't rinse your hair right away after shampooing.  You can then start washing your body if you use body wash, you can go and stand up, if you prefer to.  Once you are done cleaning your body and ready to rinse the shampoo on your hair, you can sitdown again so the water from your hair will wash the suds away from your body.  Then you can use the rest of the water to rinse your whole body.  See?  You saved a lot of water rather than using the shower in your bathroom.
  • Use a jug to store water in the fridge so you don't have to turn the faucet on every time you want to drink. It saves time and energy.
  • Check your toilet tank if the pump is functioning well or if there's no leak. Try putting a big jar under a faucet and let the water drop a little bit, in a few minutes, you wil see that the jar is starting to get filled with.
  • What about brushing your teeth?  Do you use a cup?  Using a cup when brushing teeth can save you more than a gallon a day.  The same when the guys are shaving.  Use a basin.
  • In the morning when you wake up, use either a cup or a basin then fill it up with water to wash your face.

Hospitals and Schools -

  • Some hospitals might still be doing this but I know some schools are, especially the one in the medical field.  Of course, medical people has to wash their hands to avoid or stop the spread of infections which is very good.  They always use a barrier, say a tissue paper or a napkin before touching anything in one hospital room.  Maybe they can turn off the faucet, using a barrier, when they are washing their hands with soap.  So the water don't just streaming down the drain.  Imagine how much water a single person in a hospital could save if they would also practice to turn off the faucets when washing hands with soap?

These simple tips can make a difference... in your life... in other people's lives...  and to our mother nature's life.
